From the flickr page:
"Carol, in the not too distant past all Thai men used to spend a three-month period as a Buddhist monk or novice. It was considered a rite of passage for young men -- it brought Buddhist merit to one's parents -- and something all men were supposed to do before marriage. At some point during their time at the monastery probably every one of these men posed for a portrait to give to his parents. So I guess the answer to your question is, this novice monk in the photo is probably just an ordinary teenager doing his three months.
Nowadays I would guess the percent of Thai men who still do this -- especially in urban areas -- is very low. People just don't have time for it anymore. "

Happy 100th birthday to Miep Gies
"Today is Miep Gies her 100th birthday.
During the war she and others looked after the Frank family.
Anne mentioned her in her diaries."
